The Island

Shark Island is a small, uninhabited islet off the southeast coast of Koh Tao, named for its resemblance to a dorsal fin and its reputation as a hotspot for reef sharks. The site splits into two experiences: a shallow coral garden on one side suited to beginners, and a deeper, boulder-strewn area on the other for advanced divers.

Due south and deeper still lies the MV Trident, an ex-steel-hulled German coastguard vessel and former technical diving boat, sunk in September 2010 at 36 metres. The area often sees strong current, which combined with the wreck's depth makes it unsuited to inexperienced divers.

The Dive

Shark Island was the last dive of the day, right after Sail Rock. Visibility wasn't as good as it usually is at the site.

Dive Conditions

Visibility on this dive ran around 60ft, lower than it typically is at Shark Island. Water temp was 86°F (30°C).
