Cueva Padre Nuestro is a freshwater cave system inside Parque Nacional del Este, about 15 minutes from Bayahibe, Dominican Republic.
It sits in a limestone karst area the locals call Padre Nuestro.
The cave still hold ancient Taino artifacts left behind by the indigenous people who lived across this part of the Caribbean long before European contact.

I dove Cueva Padre Nuestro in April 2026 as part of an intro to cave diving course.

The Dive

From the outside, it definitely doesn't look like much.
As you descend into the freshwater pool, you quickly uncover the underground passages from there that span miles and miles underground.

The water is completely still with no current, and visibility is excellent, assuming you've got a dive torch.
The max depth on our dive was 31 feet, with most of the time spent shallower around 20 feet average.

I'm confident this cave goes VERY deep, I don't have the training for that yet.
Hans kept the dive well within the cavern zone, meaning we stayed within natural light and always had a clear line back to the exit.

Stalactites hang from the ceiling and in some sections the rock closes in close enough that you are moving carefully through narrow passages.
The clarity of the freshwater makes the whole thing feel surreal.
Some aquatic life lives at the entrance of the cave. I saw some cray fish, guppies, crabs, tadpoles, and more!

Diving Conditions
As this is a freshwater cave, you need to adjust your buoyancy compared to saltwater.
In saltwater, with my normal setup and a 3mm wetsuit, I need four pounds of lead to be neutraully buoyant.
On this dive in, freshwater, I used no weights.
If you're diving in freshwater for the first time, bring extra weight and perform a weight check in this new environment if you're unsure.

Visibility diving Cueva Padre Nuestro was amazing, assuming your torch is shining.
Water temperature ran 77 to 79°F on our dive, and was comfortable in a 3mm wetsuit.
