El Penon Dive Site Guide: Bayahibe's Best Reef

No items found.

El Penon is widely considered the healthiest and most fish-rich reef in Bayahibe, or potentially the entire Dominican Republic.

It sits inside Parque Nacional del Este, which means no fishing, no anchoring, and so the reef  gets to thrive. The result is exactly what you'd expect: dense coral, a wall of fish at every turn, and water so clear you barely need a dive light.

I did two dives here in April 2026 with Scuba Fun, covering two different sections of the reef on each dive.

The Dive

El Penon has three separate dive sites marked by buoys running along the same long reef structure.

Most operators do back to back dives here, given the long distance boat ride.

The reef sits at a comfortable 25 feet max on the sections we dove, so you can have some long dives here.

You drop in and follow the reef the entire way.

The coral here is in noticeably better shape than closer-in sites, with dense hard coral formations and layers of life covering most available surface.

El Penon rewards divers who slow down and look carefully.

Small stuff hides everywhere: eels tucked into crevices, juvenile fish sheltering in soft corals, and the occasional drumfish or squirrelfish working the holes in the reef wall.

Above the reef top, parrotfish and wrasse cruise around.

Out toward open water is where you look for the bigger stuff.

Marine Life

One of the many invasive lionfish I saw diving here.

The reef is healthy enough that you get both variety and density.

On our dives we saw the typical Caribbean mix: snappers, angelfish, grunts, grouper, frogfish, and parrotfish in numbers. Eagle rays cruise through regularly, and turtles are common sightings.

Nurse sharks have been spotted here. One of the dive guides saw a hammerhead passing through but unfortunately I wasn't able to see or film it.

Diving Conditions

Visibility runs 20 meters or more on a normal day. Current is minimal, which makes this accessible for beginners while still being worth the trip for experienced divers.

Water temperature in April was warm enough for a 3mm shorty with no issues.

What to Know Before You Go

The boat ride from Bayahibe takes about 25 minutes, which is longer than the local sites, but the difference in reef quality makes it worth it. Some charters may surcharge for the extra fuel required to reach the site.

The shallow depth and calm conditions make it a great first ocean dive, but the marine life and visibility mean experienced divers won't be bored.
