Diving the Odyssey Wreck in Roatan, Honduras

No items found.

The Odyssey was a commercial freighter that transported goods across the Gulf of America, Caribbean, and Central America.

After sustaining damage in a fire during a rebuilding process, it was deliberately sunk in 2002 off the coast of Roatan in order to create an artificial reef for divers.

At 300 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 85 feet tall, it's one of the largest shipwrecks in the Caribbean.

In the 20+ years since it was sunk, the hull has developed into a full reef ecosystem with abundant marine life across the structure.

The wreck's deepest point sits at 110 feet, making it an advanced and deep dive.

The Dive

This is a deep dive, with the lowest point at 110 feet.

I had my Garmin Descent MK3i conservatism set to high on this dive, which meant I hit my limits before I could fully explore the wreck.

If you're comfortable doing so, dialing back conservatism gives you a bit more bottom time.

What makes the Odyssey a great dive despite the depth is the reef that surrounds it.

Once you shallow up and come off the wreck, there's a ton of life on the surrounding reef that lets you extend the dive close to an hour total.

Right before surfacing, we also passed over what appeared to be debris and rubble, likely from the Odyssey itself scattered across the seafloor.

Wreck Penetration

Penetration is possible, and the inside of the ship is worth seeing.

Roatan operators enforce wreck diver certification strictly before allowing any penetration, one of the few places I've encountered this policy.

If you don't have your wreck specialty, you're limited to the exterior. It's worth getting certified before your trip if this is on your list.

Diving Conditions

Roatan diving conditions are generally favorable year round. Visibility can go upwards of 100FT here.
